    1990 Johnson surging problem

This motor was checked out last spring when I bought it and got new everything except the power head. New electonics, choke solenoid, all that timing stuff on the front, etc and compression is 90 on all cylinders, rechecked yesterday. It ran fine last year. Last week when I took it out for the first time this year, I had trouble getting it started and keeping it running and I figured out the fuel line pump up bulb had a hole in it. On the way home, I stopped at wal-mart and got a new bulb but it looked like a terrible fit but I tightened it as much as I could on the fuel lines.
Took it out yesterday and it was slow pumping up but I got it firm and everything started fine, hole shot was fine but at about 4500 rpm it started missing and then started surging and would not go over 4800 rpm. Could this be because of the poor quality and build of the bulb, maybe still have a small air leak? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I guess this is not related but another problem, my water pressure gauge was not working but lots of water was coming out the pee holes and the engine had no indication of getting hot. Do I have a bad gauge?

Re: 1990 Johnson surging problem (Voldog)

I have an 1989 GT 150 and mine was doing the same thing, I had it checked out and it was a loose clamp on the fuel filter so it was sucking air in, unfortunetly I haven't had it out to check to see how it runs, but as soon as I do I will let you know. He also adjusted everything.

thanks okcbass. that's what I'm suspect of. I'm going to replace all my fuel line, filters, and bulb. I believe the old beast will skedaddle then.

Take the wally world special and trash it. Get you a BRP bulb. You will see the difference. See what it does and then we can troubleshoot from there.

Do not use the Wally World Bulbs, They stranded me twice when the check valves came apart and blocked up my fuel line, I only use the BRP ones now, I would suggest replacing all the fuel lines, including the ones going to the carbs, you will need about 6 feet of 5/32 fuel line, I actually couldn't find 5/32 at any local shops, finally found some a Evinrude dealer, I would try and get the BRP line as it seems more heavy duty than some others I have seen. It was a bit pricey though but better than the alternative. The main line is 3/8.

I don't know if there is a brp dealer near me. Where can I order the brp bulb and line? Is there a sponsor on here that carries brp mail order stuff?
What is the main line vs the 6.5 feet you said I needed?

What size engine is this anyway? The 3/8 fuel line runs from your tanks/tanks to the VRO under the cowling, well there is another short peice that runs to a 5 way splitter under the air silencer. The lines that come from the splitter to the carbs are 5/32, you will need about 6 feet of the 5/32 line to go from the splitter to the carbs. You will just have to measure the 3/8 line as all boats will be a bit different. Typically somewhere in the range of 10 feet should be enough with a single tank setup.

P.S. There is a certain way that the fuel lines go to each carb, If you have a factory manual it shows you the layout of the fuel lines, splitter.

    Re: (Voldog)

OK that boats is really close to mine, shoot I think it's basically the same hull. You should have tank selector valve behind you, the 3/8 hoses from the fuel tanks will go to the vro pump. Again I would do all of them if it was me.
