Anyone ever hunt from the ground, or just climb a tree for the day?

I have been drawn for a rifle controlled hunt here in Oklahoma in Nov for 1 day. I know you can use climbers, but I don't want to buy one for just one day.

I have also been invited to bow hunt this fall at a few places for a day that would require the same tactic, no stands around. Has anyone ever hunted from the ground, or climbed a tree and had much success? Or is it to hard to draw/shoot and be accurate?

Once I used it I haven't used my Loggy Bayou stand much at all.....I haven't used it at all in the last 2 or 3 yrs I just use the tree seat. It's great, nice and quiet and you can pivot where you need to go to make a shot.

I always bow hunt out of a tree simply because of theirs more movement involved. Although this year I think I am going to try and hunt on the ground. Rifle hunting I've often just sat on the ground and have had several deer walk within 10-15 yards of me and not give me a second look.

I've had dozens of deer come in toward my stand looking up....they can see excessive movement either way.

all depends on your area.. and personal experience. .. ive had good and bad results with a tree stand...ground blind i would leave for thick cover to keep from looking out of the normal... mostly im in tree stands just for vantage points most of the time.. also factor in if your stands 4ft off the ground or 15.. it makes a huge diff

True. I've had the same thing and then I've had deer walk right underneath me and not even know I was there. It makes me feel more hidden being up in the tree, if that counts for anything.

imo the main reason for elevation is scent dispersal..plus it does help hide your movements a bit...when youre on the ground , they see EVERYTHING.....definitely a challenge

ive gun hunted from the ground quite a bit..not so much wth a bow....down here its simply too thick to see anything half the time...

what about a ground blind ????

When I was younger I would just climb a tree when I gun hunted but stayed on the ground when bow hunting. That was before climbing stands were very popular . I don't believe I'd want to be on the ground during gun season especially if the area is heavily hunted. Bow season wouldn't be to bad.

I do 90% of my hunting from the ground. My dad is an excellent still-hunter and he taught me pretty well but my eyes and ears are pretty poor so I'm at a disadvantage there. I have to mostly sit and wait for the ambush.

The #1 concern is scent control. #2 is movement. Always set-up 15-20 yards off the trail and break up your outline so you having a better chance of not getting busted.

Around these parts hunting from the ground in the wrong time of the year or wrong area will get yo azz shot. LOL.

All jokes aside, gun season around here scares the hell outta me if I am close to neighboring properties. I keep it down to bow season, which is a shame cause our peak rut is during rifle season usually. That said, I have killed a few deer from the ground with my bow, and its a rush.

I hunt from the ground a lot. I have a big blind and a single person blind. My preferred style is from a tree though. If you ever do buy a good climber stand you wont regret it. My api grand slam supreme is beyond comfortable and im no small fellor!!!

I've hunted and killed both ways. I use a 5 gal bucket and get a swivel seat lid from Attwoods. I can carry a few things in it if I need or put gloves or jacket in there when I come out. Very handy for temporary hunting.

I wouldn't worry about a rifle draw hunt at spavinaw on the ground. You will have no problem getting one from the ground there. On the flip side, depending on where your bow hunting, i would recommend a tree stand of some sort. I've killed tons of deer from the ground with my bow. I usually construct some kind of brush blind w/local cover. Some of the places like packsaddle, I just gather dead tree limbs and stumps and make a home made ground blind. If there is some sort of greenery around, add some of that because it usually break up your outline better.

Will any of your friends loan you a stand for those two hunts?
