    Marlin XS7 .243

Anyone use this model Marlin? A local gun shop here has them for $299.99 and I'm looking a decent rifle to hunt with. At best I might go a couple times a year and I'm thinking this would be a good starter gun for my son in several years.

No experience with that rifle, but a .243 is a very good round! I have one that doubles as a Varmint/ Coyote gun on windy days as well as a Deer rifle when the mood hits me.

It's powerful enough for medium size game, yet has light enough recoil for introducing young shooters into hunting. My Ruger M-77 loves those 90 grain Swift Scirocco bullets and will put them into one ragged hole at 100 yards from a bi-pod.

I've never owned a .243 but know of several guys around here that shoot plenty of deer with that caliber and the good thing is it doesn't kick like a mule..

    Re: Marlin XS7 .243 (PATRO)

Patro looked at the xl7 earlier in the year for a good bad weather rifle with the synthetic blk stock in 270,best price i got was 310.00,i'd jump on one for that price, guess they are seeing the season only lasting another month and they want to move as many as possible,PM me with the dealer if you don't mind i would like to see if they have a 270.

The Marlin XL/XS series is the BEST entry level rifle out there!!!

The actions are pretty slick, triggers ain't bad at all, and the best stock at that price I've seen so far.

Here's a easy way to compare the syn stocks on different models, next time you're in a gun shop.

Simply grab the barrel and stock, at the end of the forearm, and squeeze.
Really cheap, plastic stocks will move very easy, and the same thing will happen if you rest the forearm end when shooting off a little harder object like the shooting rail on a tree stand. Think about what will happen to your POI when the stock bends easily... That's one reason I always make sure I never rest the end of the forearm, past the swivel, when shooting. You won't see as much of a difference when using a heavier rifle, or a McMillan stock, but it will play hell with you especially when using a lightweight rifle, like a Kimber.

My first, (and really ONLY) choice in ammo would be the Barnes 85 grn TSX in the .243.
The Barnes TXS's turn little guns into big guns....
