SEI LU and Revese to Neutral issues

Hey guys, Bought and installed an SEI gearcase from Eddie last fall. This is for my 99 Ficht 225. I only had a chance to run it a couple times before winter, and want to work out an issue with the shifter/linkage. The unit performs fine, and it goes into gear fine. the problem is that it needs to go BEYOND neutral to actually get there from reverse.

I just tried to shorten the shifter link after taking it apart at the motor. It will NOT shorten and appears to be all the way into the control box in the LU.

That said, am i reversed in my thinking here? Should i be lengthening that shaft? Seems to me that to get out of reverse "quicker" i need a shorter shaft.... ??? thanks, ken

You lift up on the shift rod for reverse. Forward is down. You need to put it neutral and set it to spec. From the top of the case to the center of the rod hole. I don't have the distance handy at the moment.

agreed. That's where i'm at and finding out a spec is really pointless at this point becuase the LU is mounted up. I used the old one to get the length close. But to come out of reverse you have to go up with the shaft. If neutral takes longer to get to than it should, then the shaft is too long. But when in try to thread is down into the LU further, it's bottomed out. Is there any other adjustment on this thing that i'm missing??

You can keep screwing with it or drop the LU and set it to the correct length.

When you push down on the shift rod, you're engaging reverse gear. Pulling up on the rod engages forward. In neutral, you measure from the mounting surface of the case to the center of the shift rod hole. This needs to be 21 15/16" After this is adjusted, everything should fall into place correctly. This dimension is important, because it places the adjustment feature as close to center as possible.
