    Matthews Solo Cam Feathermax, what...

What are you guys shooting? I just got back into the bow thing and hear that this thing will shoot one pin out to 25yrds, 2nd at 45yrds and my 3rd at 60 yrds. I am shooting carbon arrows, 100gr tips, , and about 63#s, but eventually will take it up to 70#s. Are you finding the same thing with your bows especially if you have a Matthews or similar bow?

I shoot a Parker. I would say most of the bows made today are so fast that you can set pins up just as you described. I do not notice any difference between 15 and 25 yards with my Parker.

Cool beans. By the way, nice to meet another "Sterling." I think I have meet about 4 others in person with the same name.

The FeatherMax has an IBO speed of 310. I'm guessing to be really accurate your probably not going to be able to get away with the pin gaps that you posted. Probably more like 1st pin 20 2nd pin 30 then 5 yard intervals after all those or 1st pin 25 2nd pin 35 and 5 yard intervals after that. Unless you see yourself shooting 60 yards for some reason I wouldn't worry about a pin much further than 45. Since your just getting started I would set your first 2 pins at whatever you choose and get proficient from that distance and in, then if you choose stretch the yardage out later on.

I shoot the new Mathews Reezen that shoots 340 IBO. I have my first pin out to 30 and next 35 and then 40, 45, 50. I could get away with pin gaps similar to those you posted, but no way could I be accurate enough to meet my standards. I practice out to 50 on a regular basis, go to 3d bowshoots on a regular basis, and I will not shoot at a deer past 35 yards. There are just too many things that can go wrong at the farther distances.

The best thing for you to do is just shoot your bow and see how it shoots. I can tell you how I would set it up all day long but the bottom line is what you are comfortable with and what shoots good enough for your accuracy standards.

Okay, that may work out well. I am gearing up and preparing for an elk hunt and a guy at a bow shop suggested something like those gaps. I may have not hear him right, but I think I was close on the gaps.

Make sure he chronographs your arrow speed before you go on an elk hunt. The arrow weight and speed make up the kinetic energy. Some states require a minimum arrow weight to hunt elk.

Does Colorado have any rules like that?

I prefer to go for 30 yd , 40 yd, 45 yd pins for hunting. I won't shoot beyone 45 yds at a game animal anyways.

When I'm shooting 3-D I use a Sure-loc with micrometer adjustments from 20-100 yds so I can extend my range for the long shots but with hunting I've never seen the need.

That bow at 70# and a 350-375 grain arrow will probably shoot near 280-295 fps. That being said it is really not that fast, actually average by todays standards. One pin probably out to maybe 20yds, than set your pins from there. I'll bet you will have a few more in-between for more accuracy. You may even consider a HHA slider sight with one pin which is adjustable from 10-60 yards, no guessing. It allows for quick quiet adjustment in the field regardless if the target is moving and works great when using a range finder. Range him anywhere from 10-40 yards-reach down and adjust-shoot.
