Dobyns Extreme 784 ML Jig Rod??

I have been looking at this rod over the winter and it is growing on me for my jig fishing but that is a lot of $$$$$$ to take a chance on. Just curious if anyone has experience with this rod and if so what are your thoughts?

I currently have a Dobyns Champion 734C that I had planned to use. Should I just stick with what I have or take a chance an pull the trigger on the 784 ML rod?

it's a crap shoot buying a high end (or any) rod or reel without fishing with it first. many times i have bought them only to find it was not really what i was looking for. i end up giving it to my kid or having to try to sell it for less than i gave for it. come to think of it that's how he gets most of the stuff he has.

Thanks for the great feedback but how is it when used to pitch and flip 1/2oz jigs to cover?

The 734C is a great jig rod......my biggest fish (11.06) came on a 734C with a half ounce TnT Wadda jig with an Uncle Josh pork trailer. You won't be disappointed.

I personally love this rod for open water jigging. I would say the tip is a little soft for pitching or flipping imho. I use the DX745C for jigs aroung cover. But team the 784c with a football head and watch the magic happen. My 784 catches a LOT of bass here every year. it is a constant on my deck since I toss a jig at every rock point I pass and I comb a lot of offshore rock piles and road beds. The 784 was responsible for most my checks last year.

100% agree with what BassMan says. I have the rod and its the cats meow for football jigs and I use it for carolina rigs and texas rigs deep as well. Thats exactly what it was designed for and there is no better for that. However I would second the DX745 if you want the perfect all purpose shallow plastics/jig rod. That thing has a ton of power.

I own 2 784ml jig rods. You will not be sorry if you try one, I throw a lot of 3/4 oz football jigs on this rod, but have no problem throwing 1/2 oz baits as well. Give it a shot! BC

I use this rod for football jigs, texas rigs, flutter spoons, and a few other baits. It is the rod that converted me to Dobyns rods. I bought 2 from TW on memorial day sale a few years back and its one of the few rods I have kept from anyone stock or custom for more than a few years (tackle junkie.)

The DX784 was designed by Mike Long. I listened to a podcast from Gary Dobyns talking about how he kept telling Mike Long it would not sell and no one would buy it and now it is one of their most popular rods. I also listened to one from Mike Long talking about as well and he designed it for fishing deep lake out west I believe he said. It excels to me at dragging a jig or worm in deep water. I use it a lot in 30-40' with 3/4-1oz football jig, 1oz carolina rig, 12" worms texas rigged and the 6" flutter spoons. It will also handle a 3/8oz jig as well though if needed. This is an entirely different rod in action than the 734C or the DX745. Both of them have a slower action. The DX784 is an XFast. It has enough tip to cast big jigs but you get into the backbone of the rod very quick which I think aids in hooksets in deep water when using fluorocarbon. If you are using braid then the 734C is fine as the modfast action helps keep from tearing a hole in fishes mouth to me. However, if you are using fluorocarbon, I really like that XFast action to compensate for the stretch and the amount of line out when fishing deep ledges. The faster action of the DX784 also makes it fish more like a more powerful rod than the DX744 or 734C to me.

I have fished a lot of rods in the Dobyns lineup and am a big fan of them. If I could have only 4 or 5 they would be a DX795, DX784, DX742C, 734C, 733C and a 765CB Glass for my style of fishing. There are others I like, but I could live with those. If I could only have two, it would be DX784 and 765CB Glass rod, I think that shows how much I like it. The DX784 can handle all my deep structure fishing and most shallow water fishing (it is not a flipping stick.) The 765CB Glass can handle most any reaction bait and even smaller swimbaits.

Just my thoughts, hope it helps.
