    Mercury trouble

I was referred here by a guy from the GON.

I've got a 2005 115 optimax that is giving me trouble. When I take off before I get on plane the alarm will sound, one long solid beep until I let off of the throttle and my boat will slow to idle. If I turn the engine off and crank it up it will do fine getting on plane the first time; however, if I come off of plane and try to get back on plane it will do it again. After it started doing this I took it to a boat mechanic, and he still has it and can't find what is wrong. He has had it for about 6 weeks and has been working on it for about 5 weeks and can't find what is wrong. He ran a diagnosis on the motor but it found nothing other then that the motor went in to guardian, when he clicks on that it has the cause as "none." He seems to think that it is an electrical problem because sometimes when you trim, and sometimes when I crank it up, the fishfinder will turn off or say input voltage low.

If he doesn't have it fixed by next weekend I'm going to pick it up, it has taken him too long if he has really been working on it as long as he says. Does anyone have an idea as to what may be wrong with it?

Sorry for the book, but I figured this might be a way to avoid some questions. Thanks.

I agree with posting it in the Merc forum but you may want to check the amp rating on your cranking battery. You need at least 800 cca for an Optimax or you will have problems.

Mine did the same thing. They changed the water pump on mine and it was fixed. The code on the engine readout should tell you waht is wrong. Good luck!

Re: Mercury trouble (2005 Champion 196)

Some of them set the alarm for low voltage. Could be a bad connection at the battery.
My cousin had this happen and it got so bad it went off every time he trimmed up or down.

OptiMax motors MUST have a minimum 1000 mca battery ( in good shape)
I found this out the hard way.If my battery is a little low or weak my Opti
does crazy things like yours. I spent a bunch of money at the dealer before I found this out. My dealer/mechanic had no clue of what was wrong. He put it on the computor but it showed nothing wrong.
    I sure hope this helps.
