Around here you need to carry your registration papers as well. That prevents somebody from just stealing a sticker and throwing it on the boat.
We have to have our registration papers and proof of insurance on the boat whenever we are on the water.

In Illinois once you have your boat registered then I believe that is all that you are required to carry.
However to be on the safe side I would suggest that you put a packet together just like you would have for your car. Include a copy of your registration information, trailer plate registration, and also proof of insurance with liability coverage. The last one, insurance is required on some specific lakes, (Jacksonville for sure, and I believe Mattoon) as example. Also if you are going to fish tournaments then some of them require that you provide proof of insurance.

In Illinois it is required that you have your registration card with you in the boat....the sticker isn't enough.
This is enforced by both the Coast Guard and IDNR. I carry registration and insurance in a ziplock somewhere in the boat at all times.
As for other things the CPO will check for:
1. Life jackets in good condition (no tears or holes) for each person
2. Throwable device, it does not have to have an attached rope if your boat is certain size (I will check regs)
3. Fire extinguisher, working order and not expired.
4. Horn or whistle.
Also, if you have passengers, the CPO will ask them to get their life jackets....make sure they know where they are and reachable within a few seconds.
I guess that I must stand corrected on the requirement for the registration card. I was not real sure about the need to have it on the boat, but have always done as stated and had them in a Zip Lock in the clove box along with insurance papers and proof of insurance.
