OK guys. This question may be trivial to all of you but this is my first big boat(Skeeter ZX202) and I'm stumped.
What are the trim rods for and how do they function? My last, and first boat had a trim, but no trim rods. It was only a 60HP Merc.
On my new boat I trim the motor down to the trim rods and the motor stops there. So what do they do and do they move at all?
Sorry for the dumb question, but I seriously have no idea what these do.
The trim rods are the rams on the end of the hydraulic cylinders the raise and lower the motor to adjust the trim angle. When raised above a certain degree of trim (maximum extension of the trim cylinders) the hydraulic tilt takes over. The tilt will lift the engine from the trim rods but it contains a pressure bleeder. If the engine is accelerated while in tilt it will lower to the highest trim position preventing the boat from running much over idle while in tilt position. The trim can be lowered on most boats to a negative trim angle. This allows for stern lift during initial acceleration and the operator can trim out once on plane.

Thanks Keith, but what makes them operate? When I trim my motor all the way down it hits the rods and stops. the rods do not move. What am I missing here?
Nevermind. Evidently I'm dumber than Loyd Christmas.
I got it figured out. It was operator error.
