    Boat porpoising

    Good morning all
Having a little trouble with my boat. When I trim the motor up it porpoises real bad. In order to stop it I have to trim the motor all the way down. I do not have a jack plate and not sure if I can put one on it. I have a Triton 188 SF with a 150 optimax. Would moving the motor up or down help this or is it just that I don't really know how to drive it yet. I have not had it that long. I'm not a speed demon at all but with the motor trimmed down I can only go 40~45 MPH. Thanks for the help. I posted this in the general boat forum but that maybe I better post here.

Sounds like another case of the motor being to low!! A jackplate would be benificial cause it gives ya the up and down play ya need and gets your prop back in less turbulent (cleaner) water....

How high are you triming the motor?? Louis

I don't even have to trim it up one quarter of the way. I was told that the more speed I had the better it would get but this does not seem to help. The only way I can stop it from bouncingall over the place is to trim it all the way down, of course when I do this I loose a lot of speed. Can you put a jackplate on a fish and ski. I thought I read on here that you could not or should do it.

I have seen jack plates on many F&S, what prop do you have and if this is a new boat I would take it back to the dealer and let them get it set up right.. If they tell ya you need more seat time then tell them to take you out and show ya once how to drive her.. Try to measure the prop shaft height like I mentioned in my other post, and do you have a water pressure guage?? What does it read at your fastes speed with a little trim// Louis

The hulls are basically the same if not exact duplicates with an alternate topside design.

so jack plates are as possible and suggested for them as well. Jack plates places the motor into a less drag situation on any hull! We call it cleaner water.

"or is it just that I don't really know how to drive it yet."

Also partly true. More on water time will of course aid such.

Others suggested you drag your dealer out for an on the water training. Do it! Boat dealers are notorious for "selling" and some can even service your rig, but it seems a real challenge for them to do any training! How many folks first boat can push 100 mph off the lot? WAY too many! The lawyers will soon have them doing more training than selling!!!

Boat dealers across the nation need to get better. If they train newboaters better, they wil have a much longer customer base.

I will also add that new boaters need to put their own egos in the locker for a time as well. Too many of you spout crap to a dealer or such when you are so ignorant you cause everything from ramp delays to accidents! All too many just because you "THINK" you know it all.

Ignorance is curable! Cure yours before you hit the lakes.

Again leave your egos at home! Come clean and learn. Learn to pilot your boat in a legal and safe manner, lern how to back the thing up, learn to follow the demonstrations of those that do know!

I took it out this weekend and waited till I had pretty good speed and just bumped the trim up and seemed to do better. Water was rough due to all the pleasure boaters but it did not seem to bounce as bad. Thanks for all the advice.

    Re: Boat porpoising (mperry)

My newer rig is a world class porpoise around 20-30mph plus you must trim out half way beyond the 3/4 mark to get max speed...here is my question??
Should I raise the engine? The reasoning is... my previous rig was perfect at 60% of trim and never propoised... read somewhere the engine too low did that? Who knows this stuff for sure?
(its 2.5 below pad now and engine can go one hole higher)
Soooo... since its an SX200 where a jplate is a no no to hull warranty...whatsup (or down) here?

    Check out this post:

I have the same problem with my Skeeter SL210. I have purchased a Hydrofoil for it but haven't installed it yet. This guy seems to have solved the problem, but with a substantial investment in a new prop.

HTH, and hope to see you on the lake sometime. You are down around Patoka, correct? Also post on crappie.com?

    Re: Boat porpoising (SkeeterJeff)

I had similar problems with my fish and ski....hydrofoil and prop got it handling like a ski boat with fishing seats. Much better ride and control at lower speeds where I spend most of my time. My advice is to call Triton and talk thru your issues with the boat and like others said get your dealer involved. That would be my first step. Triton should know the boat best and provide recommendations and the dealer...in a perfect world...should come right behind them as a close second helping you get it to handle like you want it too.

Fish and ski's are a blend of two opposite boats. Bass ---- as fast as you can!!!!! Ski....slow speed handling is a priority. Hard to set-up to optimize both and a compromize is just what it is. Not so good at either. I picked ski as a priority since mine is a family boat first and a fishing boat second and the professionals got me there....took a while to listen....lol!!!!! Now it shines below 25 mph but top end suffered some. BTW....getting there did require money. Tell Triton what you are trying to accomplish and I'll bet they'll get you there. A boat that is hard to handle or doesn't do like you want is no fun. Skeeter was receptive to my concerns and I am sure Triton will be a big help to you. It may be seat time.....gather the information from those who really know and listen...

Hello there Mike!, I haven't seen much of you lately. My little ole Nitro F/S has a 115 Mercury. Before I ever took it out I put a Hydra Foil on it. No bounce to it. Stick it on the way out of the water and trim up. Now my max speed is only about 45-47 mph. but as I throttle down just a minor down trim and she stays flat until she settles down off plane. I trust all is well in Indiana. The Crappie fishing is still slow at best on the twins. Better days ahead.
