    Can someone explain jackplates?

All I know is they set your OB off the back and you can move it up and down.
What kind of gains are to be made? Are the sizes universal? Does any Jackplate fit on any boat? what is the difference between a... 6" and a 12"? What do those measurements stand for? Are they just for higher HP motors?
    Stuff like that. Thanks guys,
    Bryce

Re: Can someone explain jackplates? (BRYCE)

    1) 99% of modern jack-plates fit most motors and boats, now there is smaller varieties for small motors but when bassers usually talk about jack-plates they are talking about normal 6" , 8", 10", 12", and the extreme 14" bullet plates.
    2) other than the up and down motion the plate is designed to help in having the motor run in cleanser water ( turbulence free) hense a better bite for the prop and also better water pressure and cooling for the engine.
    3) measurements of inches is the approx set back from the transom some 6" may in reality be 5 1/2 or maybe 6 1/4 inches but they are usually all counted in the rounded inch measurement.
    4) gains can be better handling, a few more mph, better water pressure( cooling).
    5) as stated before they make all kinds but to be honest the main use is in motors over 115-135 hp, lower hp engines usually don't have the mph, lift and such to be of much use and also they are usually not run on pad boats or modified V boats which most Glass bass boats are and a few alum boats like express which are made for speed and have a modified hull design and not the usual john boat design. jacks also usually are not used on deep v hulls as there is too much turbulence in their design and also where the water cleans up is way out. some v hiulls will have an extruded ( added length) to the transom for the use of a outboard but they are for the most part rare.

Re: Can someone explain jackplates? (lkhartwl)

Thank you sir. I was trying to figure out if a jackplate would be better for my boat.
I have a 115 with a mod V, aluminum, hull. So It would not be good for my boat.
    Thanks for your help,
    Bryce
