'94 Ranger Comanche 492VS

I have a chance to buy a very nice 1994 Ranger bass boat with only 43 hours on the boat and motor, my worry is the motor is a Mercury 2.5 efi offshore motor with a hydraulic jack plate, my buddy is telling me that it's too much motor for a bass boat and my boating experience, but I've had other people say it's no big deal just don't go fast. Any info would greatly be appreciated.

I'd say go for it. Know your limits. Practice makes perfect. Be safe and always wear a PFD with a kill switch attached while the big motor is running. I compare it to a car I recently owned that would top out at 170. I was still able to drive it around and keep it reasonable. So should you with this boat.

I agree. Follow proven safety practices and be patient with your learing curve and try to have someone else (hopefully with experience) with you.

Unless the motor is rated above the recommended HP Rating for the 492 I wouldn't be concerned about it being too much motor.

The difference between an offshore motor and a freshwater motor is usually limited to compnents designed to make it less susceptible to corrosion in the saltwater environment.

Out of curiosity what is the HP rating anyway??

I'm thinking that it is a 250+ motor, that would make a wicked ride. I'd say go for it, just don't run it hard till you can

My boss has the exact same boat. Super rideing boat, he has a 175 on his and it runs awesome. Cant imagine how good one would do with that HP should be a wonderfull, and SAFE boat Id think.

According to the Ranger specs page that hull is rated for 235 hp.

Like is said above if your not comfortable with it at high speeds then just don't go that fast!
