    1987 GT 150 VRO

I have a 1987 Johnson GT 150. The boat is in storage right now and I can't get the model #. I have a general question and was told to ask in this forum.

I have been told by several people that I should bypass the VRO and start premixing my gas. This is a new boat (to me) and I've had it out a half dozen times before winter staorage. It ran good, but I was told that if the VRO stops working the motor could seize without much warning.

So in general is bypassing this a good idea, and if so what's the best way to do it?

Thanks in advance for your input!

This is a decision that you will have to decide on your own, it is your motor. Just because I have always used the VRO on my motor don't mean that you should do as I done. OBTW our motors are practically the same other than the year, 85 vs 87.
Here is a good article for you to read as you make up your mind.

Personally, I would keep the VRO. I had an 85 150xp for almost 15 years and the only trouble I ever had was when the went to the Damn alcohol in the gas. Had to get a VRO rated for the new fuel. Never had any more trouble.

I always liked keeping the oil and gas separate. Once and a while I would dump a quart or two in the gas for some extra lube but not very often. Less trouble when they are separate.

I always thought the VRO got a bad rap when it really did not deserve it.
