It really depends on what matters more to you b/c the 998 has the bigger screen but the 898 will be a more crisp image b/c of the same pixel count in a smaller display. Thats how it was explained to me by a friend of mine which happens to be an engineer at humminbird or techsonic ind. I personally went with the 998 and see no problems with it but I have never been on the water with the 898.

By the way the internals of the two are exactly the same
I just put an 898 on my 185 Ranger, and I love it. I also added the y cable, and did a second transducer in the hull for high speed sonar.
It's great.

That was the answer that I was looking for. The display sizes are not much different at all it doesnt look like and the price difference is about $500. Which is huge to me as a college student. Thanks for the replies!!

I have the 898 and it works just fine for me. I will be getting one for the bow later on. 500.00 for an inch is a difference.. lol
