First try with Side Imaging... How do they look?

I just finished installing my 997c SI this morning so I took it out for a test run. I am able to read bottom until I hit 39mph, so I'm OK with that. I don't need to go 60mph anyway, 39 saves gas haha.

Anyway, how do you all think the images turned out? What changes in settings should I make? It was super sunny today, so I missed quite a few fish until I got home and loaded them on the computer. Any tips for that?

Also, I'm getting a little bit of prop wash in my images... any way to get rid of that? I don't have a jack plate.

This first one is an easy one... it's the end of the boat ramp that I launched out of. It's a pretty short one, and has a center 'pier' between the two ramp lanes.

This one I have no clue about. I went over it a couple different ways, and it always looked like a perfect square. Any ideas? Old foundation for something? This lake has NO houses on it so the only docks are in the marina (which I was very far from).

This is another one where I'm clueless. I'm seeing 3 evenly spaced things on top of a small hump on the bottom. The standing tree just up from that hump is pretty cool too.

This last one is pretty interesting to me. This is one of the spots on the lake where I have always been able to count on a keeper, but today I found out why. I guess I always missed this while looking at the trolling motor fish finder, but today I found out it's a nice rock pile!

Well, at least that's what I think they all are . If I got anything wrong please correct me because I need to learn quick! I have a big college fishing tournament on Kentucky Lake next week so I have about 5 more trips to learn how to use this thing!

I think your images a very good. We are all learning this together. I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me could peak them, but their working fine. I don't find the prop wash objectionable at all. You mentioned that it was bright sunny and sometimes when it is like that I will change the colors to see which one works best in that bright sunlight and see which color palet will cause object or fish to stand out more. You always see more once you take a picture and start studying it than you do out there in the bright sun and that's one reason I change the palets to see what causes things to be amplified. The poles look like they might have been power poles or something like that as they are pretty tall probally 25 or 30 feet long. They also seem to continue in a line. Your right, the rocks tell why you were always catching something there and you identified that.

Your doing great, thanks for sharing your pictures. With my unit, to get more detail, I will reduce my SI to 75 or 80 feet and may only look at one side. I only have the 798 and with the little screen it sure does make it bigger for me to see. Good job!

If youre getting readings to 39, dont worry about the prop wash. Theres nothing in there anyway.

Decrease your side range to 70 if your looking for fish. They will pop at that range, 125s good for looking for structure.

Use the right side/left side rather than the zoom box, its faster.

Zooming past 2x rarelly tells you more.

Pic # 2 looks like an old sunken crib to me.

Pic #3 is 4 trees, or some kind of dock posts setup on the hump

I think youre good to go.

What is your SI frequency set on?

I'm only 50% sure I know what you're asking for, but I think I have it set on 455kHz maybe? Is that what you're asking for?

    My SI Enhance Settings are:
    Sensitivity: 11
    Contrast: 10
    Sharpness: Low

On my 998 you have 2 choices for si freq. 800 or 455. I assume the 997 is the same way. Go to main menu, sonar tab to toggle the freq.

Looking good and settings look pretty close. Might want to post what you are running so others can get started like your great images.

Keep sharing and I'll keep looking!
