A guy told me that he sews his grass in the winter - tries to time it just right with the last snow storm. Before the snow hits, he'll broadcast seed out into the yard.
He said that when the snow starts to melt, the ground gets really soft and the snow will push the seed down into the ground.
Is this really true? Would you try and put down some fertilizer at the same time using this method?
I don't believe the snow pushes the seed down, more like the melting snow keeps the ground/seed moist and gives the seed a head start by covering it so the birds don't eat it

Not sure how you would know if you have the last snow of a season... Also don't think the snow will push it down in any way.
Im in New England and I seeded just before the first snow, reluctantly, back when I was a young with encouragement from an old timer who swore by it. I have to say in my experience it has worked year after year for me. I usually don't have a choice, need to do it to get the job done but the results do seem to be superior. I always felt it was something to do with having every possible growing day of the spring to benefit the lawn so by the time it has to compete against weeds & drought it is as hearty a possible.
When we do it in the late fall the ground is not frozen yet. Not too sure what it is like where your at but trying to figure on the last snow storm here you would either have totally frozen ground or a mud bog.
At this point, I'd go for it as soon as the ground is soft and you can walk in it without making a mud hole mess. Good luck! Don't plant too much or youll be stuck mowing when you could be fishing!

Do you fertilize at the same time, or wait until later?

Yes I have heard of this, But have never done it. It sounds reasonable to me.

yeah a local lawn and garden center owner told me that's how he does his own yard.
yes this is ture. i sew it in the snow and as the groung thaws it will pull the seed in. works great with fescues, bluegrass and clover. no i wouldnt add fertilizer at this time wait till emergent of two-three inches and after first mowing. a starter fertilizer or a light turff builder at that time. bluegrass requires 2lb of nitrogen per 1000 sq. ft. depending wether or not bagging.. do the math on the bag of fertilizer to determin this number. nitrogen is the first. ex 10-10-10 50lb bag is 10% of 50 = 5lbs nitrogen in the whole bag which would cover 2500sq ft. at 2 lb of N per 1000sq. ft. or break this in half and apply in two applications 3 weeks apart. rule of thumb is grass will uptake fertilizer at a ratio of 3 to 1 to 2 respectfully
