    Leaky Toilet Tank

Got an upstairs toilet where the water in the tank leaks down (apparently thru the flapper valve because there are no visible leaks) slowly. I've changed the flapper valve a couple times now and also cleaned the tank area where the valve sits. any idea what might be causing this? Thx!!!

are you using any chemical cleaners in the tank? Sometimes they can cause damage to the "seat" where the flapper sits.

the flapper you replaced it with may be bad too.......have had that happen a lot to me. only other thing i think of would be your flush valve gasket may need to be replaced

I guess the only thing not mentioned so far is a hair line crack. The crack can be so small that you won't see it, but water seeps through. I had this happen and was lucky enough to repair it by spreading a thin layer of silicone on the leak area, after letting the tank dry.

I never backlash, but each time I go fishing I practice fixing them, just in case I ever do really backlash.

Put some food coloring in the tank and then watch to see what area the colored water is coming from. Works on livewells too!

I know where its leaking to I just cant figure out why. Its going back down the drain. I've changed the flapper 2 opr 3 times now and lightly sanded the area where the flapper sits. still leaks out.... sometimes. I'm about ready pull it out and just get a new one

did you replace the flush valve gasket?? seals the the flush valve to the tank, and when it goes bad water seeps through the system. it's going to be either that or likely a crack at this point

forgot one other thing...........some of the flapper style flush valves can get a fracture or hair line crack. usually, it's where the fill tube meets the body of the valve near the flapper........just a thought, for the trouble you've gone through already, you should be able to pick up a cheap korky valve w/flapper kit under $20 and just replace the hole thing

    Re: Leaky Toilet Tank (moto)

Sounds like the flapper valve is not seatting . Cut the stop off andlet the water drain down below the the fapper drain then wipe clean and feel for any nicks and if no nicks try useing some sand paper around the drain any way then fill and see if it will seat ,if not then you have to take the tank off and install a new drain " the black drain in the bottom of the tank "" thats the only way that water can leave the tank .

    Re: Leaky Toilet Tank (rchavis)

I've already tried the sandpaper trick and that didnt change anything. It doesnt happen all the time. I think I'm gonna just change the whole valve assembly etc. Now my downstairs one which is about a year old keeps running. I give up!! Thx for the suggestion!

    Re: Leaky Toilet Tank (Astro-T)

had one do this all the time.changed everything in it.the one i put in then was flat so the flapper was flat on it and not at a angle.then the other started doing it.these pots were old so i put two new ones in with smaller tanks.
