    Water heater frustration!

I have a water heater in my hunting lodge in which the pilot won't stay lit.

Every time we come in from hunting, we have to light the pilot and wait around for the water to heat up so we can shower.

The water heater is a 2004 model, running on natural gas.

Any ideas on how to fix it? The rest of the crew is wanting to dump money on a new one, but I feel like it could be fixed pretty easy, especially since it's not really all that old.

    Help!

Sounds like a bad thermo couple? or there is a draft that keep blowing it out.

Have you cleaned the pilot. If there is even just a little bit of dust on it, it can effect it.

No. Probably would be a good thing to check - it's in the "mud room" of the lodge where the waders go and cleanliness sometimes goes by the wayside.

Good stuff guys! Thanks for the replies!

i would check the thermocouple and make sure the exhaust duct is clear and not getting a down draft. some newer tanks have a screen under the tank that gets temperamental. if it has one, wire brush it or try and vacuum it

New thermocoupler didn't do the trick. Had a plumber out to look at it - he couldn't figure it out either. Guess we'll try cleaning around the pilot some more.

You light the pilot, fire up the burner, and the water gets good and hot. Once the burner shuts off, so does the pilot. It's pretty frustrating.

Do you by any chance have an "excess flow valve" on your gas supply line? If so , this could be one place to look. If the valve has gotten weak and your burners kick out, the valve could be shutting your gas flow down. If you think this may be the problem, run a straight copper or black iron line into the heater and see if the problem is still there. Most all of the new flex lines have these valves installed on them....... Good Luck!!!!!

does your tank have a screen of sorts on the under side? our tanks are ao smiths, rheems and i think bradfords. all of ours have them and are near 8 yrs old. if it does, the screens get dirty and need cleaning. otherwise, there's something amiss with your exhaust duct or your gas valve is crapping out. did you over tighten the therocouple?

I was about to mention overtightening the thermocouple and snappin' that dude... other than a faulty valve...
