Any ideas to keep 2001 135hp Ficht EMM cool?

I'm about to send in my EMM to DFI to get worked on. Seems this happens a lot, they were completing my questions before me. Apparently a component in it gets hot and shortens its lifespan - just a matter of when I'll need another EMM. I'm sure a few more people have been through this.

Other than frequent water impeller/pump changes, checking the water hoses to and from the EMM, what else is there? I also ordered the high volume water inlet screens, 0339247. Has anyone installed an electric fan like they do on trucks? I'm thinking maybe cutting a few more holes in the cowling! Or get some scoops molded out of it! Any ideas gang?

    Thanks.

I believe what they are telling you is that thy have identified a part that over heats and when they replace the part it will be replaced with a part that can disipate the heat better. They advertise that they will do the latest hardware updates.

From what I understand they beef it up to be stronger than the original....

True guys, but the rep at DFI said it's going to fail too, just a matter of when. The components they're using either aren't as bulletproof as they'd like or the design isn't as good as it could be. Especially down here in FL with the heat. He said to do anything and everything to keep it cool to prolong its life.

Short of buying a spare EMM to swap out, it's like I'm on borrowed time. Just don't know when it'll die on ya. I've never heard of a line of outboards that go through so many EMM's... .

I'm thinking maybe some small cooling fans like the ones they use on computers. Heck, my buddy tells me to run the boat without the cowling on! Nah, maybe a few sporty splits in the cowling for better air flow during WOT.

DFI fixes whatever problem you have with the EMM, plus replaces known weak components at the same time to help with reliability. It comes with a years warranty.

A fan doesn't help, the EMM is water cooled.

Thanks for the replies everyone. Appreciate the feedback. With all due respect, I've heard and read about all the "improvements," but this is my 2nd board in 3 years and DFI is still making a pretty good living repairing all these EMM boards. So that means the components, design, etc. isn't what it's supposed to be if it's failing so quickly and frequently. The current setup of cooling it with water passing through isn't enough... maybe it's my situation, living here in hot South Florida and running WOT during those hot summer days... maybe it's the extreme temps when the boat and motor is under cover when not in use baking the components daily too. I've just never heard of a line of motors that are so famous for blown EMMs.

Thanks for indulging me fellas, just trying to learn more about this and how to better protect my investment(s).

Just read this post bit late I knowbut what if instead of using water that has already been warmed up after cooling the vapor separator you rerouted the flow so water passed through th emm first then it would be cooler and may be more efficient.perhaps even use two separate supplies from a suitable tee. Just a thought .never had this prob over here in uk it's b****y freezing compared to your climate.
