Gut Hook Removal - Annual Spring Tip

Hi guys, this is my annual spring posting of how to remove a gut hooked fish without a drop of blood, cutting off the hook or damaging the fish. I've used it with success every time I've had to use it and others have too.

Each year I've posted this there is someone who has not heard of this technique, uses it and saves a fish that would otherwise be dead or swimming around with a hook in its gullet.

It's amazing how easy and effective it works. Click here (and consider printing): http://www.walleyesunlimitedus...e.pdf

all you need is a hook out tool. Takes about 2 seconds. Best tool for the job and you don't have to put your hand all up in the gills of the fish.

There is no question these remove the hooks but they take a little bit of gut with it because they are designed to rip the barb out not remove the hook in the same direction as the barb. It is not retrieval of the hook that is the goal, it is survival of the fish.

    Re: (Jake Grey)

The hook remover rotates the hook in the same direction as your diagram, you just don't have to put your fingers in the gills of the fish. You are basically reaching your fingers through the delicate lungs of the fish. In my experience, it works like your hook removeal system, it just uses a tool instead of fingers. I don't have trouble with it ripping out the gut flesh.

Yep. Been doing this for years. Just have to be careful with the gills. Otherwise works every time.
