    Removing powerhead, 55 Johnson?

I'm working on a 1976 55 Johnson that had locked up. It has since broken free but I thought I better take a look at things. Pistons and cylinders looked spotless. Took the intake off and things looked great in there. Took the rod caps off and the bearings look burnt, discolored. Figured I would pull the powerhead. Shift shaft is loose and all the apparent bolts are out. The gasket let loose everywhere except the front edge. Did I miss a bolt(s) somewhere?

You get the nut for the stud? How many bolts you remove?

Whew! I got it. Never thought a gasket could hold that good. Was starting to get worried.

Since you're both here, I'm not sure what to look for in this motor (55EL76E). It locked up while he was running full throttle. After a few hours it would turn over real slow. Pistons, rings and cylinder walls look spotless. The rod bearings came out in separate pieces, all needle bearings out of the cages, and were very discolored. Turning the flywheel over without the rods/pistons in isn't really smooth. Kinda feels like flat spots in it. Suggestions?

Yep. Got it apart yesterday and the lower bearing and seal are shot. Is it OK to just replace the one bearing, or should they all be replaced?

You can replace the bearing and seal separately. I think the bearing is approx $25.00 and the seal is around $8-10. As long as the housing looks good with no distortion I'd just re-install it. May also want to think about replacing the upper bearing to. Although that one is a little pricey, but while it is apart....

Just giving it a quick inspection showed the other bearings, surfaces and seals to be good. Will check it out and hopefully get by with the one bearing/seal. Any BBC people to get parts through?

I haven't removed the old bearing yet so I'm not 100% sure. Got it apart late last night and decided to call it a night.

Pulled the bearing off, literally, with a puller. Was stuck on there pretty good. The surface of the shaft has some burrs from the bearing spinning but should clean up OK I think.
