its a flasher. it will mark bottom and fish. when you turn it on. you turn the gain up until you see a red line indicating bottom. you will then see suspended fish in green yellow or red usually. green is the weakest signal. indicating weeds or small fish. yellow is smaller or medium fish. red is a strong return indicating larger fish. the thicker the red line at the bottom, the harder the bottom is. they're not the greatest for fishing weeds but work well in open water situations.
