Installing a trim / tilt on a 90 hp motor

I have a Johnson 90HP SN# J90MLCRD that does not have power trim or tilt installed on it. I was talking to my mechanic and he told me that it would not be hard to convert it over to a power trim/tilt I would just need to pull the motor and split the motor bracket to install the trim/tilt from another Johnson motor. Does this sound correct? If so how hard is this to really do?

That's only to put the hydraulic unit on the motor. You still have to add a switch at the control box along with the relays and mounting box on the motor, plus run wiring up through the boat.

+1 to what Seahorse says, I will say i had to change the trim motor on our 1988 110hp last summer BUT I managed working the tilt/trim system around with the motor still on the boat and w/o having to touch the motor brackets.

Well I go tit installed this morning and everything went together just like is should. After running the motor up and down several times it seams like there is an issue with the trim motor and I will need to look further into this. Thanks for all the help

    Re: Installing a trim / tilt on a 90 hp motor (Firefighter615)

The trim motor needs to come off. It is mounted on by 3 screws and it has 2 wires coming out of the trim motor, is there a trick or a secret to getting the back screw out without having to pull the motor off the boat? I got this trim unit used and I am willing to open the trim motor and clean or rebuild it if that is possible. I have never worked on a trim motor before but I am willing to give it a try. If I run the motor all the way up and I take off the trim motor will there be a chance that the motor will drop? This might be good to know since I will have my head in that area working. Thank for all the help.

Sorry but the easiest way is to pull the motor for that trim system. Best bet is to make two jumpers and hook them to a battery and then connect them to the trim motor harness. The wires are blue and green. Blue up Green down. Red to Blue and black to green. motor should raise, then reverse and it should go down. A good alternator shop can rebuild it for you for around $75.00. They'll have all the parts needed.

I know Champ is probably right but I will say again I was able to remove the bolts hold the trim unit in place and "rock" the unit back (toward the back of the boat) enought to get a hold of thatr last screw. I mighta just got lucky though.

Didn't say it had to come off. That back one is a pain. But before I pulled the motor or the trim motor I'd hook up some jumpers and hook them up to the trim motor harness and make sure it is broken.

I did connect the motor directly to a battery and it still would not work correctly. So I pulled the trim motor and opened it up to find lots of rust and the brushes were bad plus one of the springs behind the brush was missing. I am going to contact the boat shop to see if they have another trim motor to swap out. Since I have pulled the trim motor and opened the system what kind of oil do I put back in the system (if I need any) and do I need to bleed the system? If I do can someone tell me how to do this?

    Thanks for all the help
