Acetone will work. Put some on a lint free towel. Rub the area in one direction and flip towel a few time.

I have some mineral spirits, would this work ? If not will the acetone do any thing to the gelcoat ?
Spirits might leave a residue. Acetone will not hurt the gel. Do you have any denatured alcohol, this will work also.
Mineral spirits will remove the wax, and maybe the residue.
Acetone will remove it and the residue.
Acetone evaporates very quick, it also will remove all the oils from your skin so use gloves .
Acetone will not harm gelcoat when used as a cleaning agent, but you do not want to leave any acetone or soaked rags sitting on the glass for extended periods of time as it will continue to react if left puddled on the gel.
Do not wipe any plastic dash pieces or windscreens with either as they will react to plastics.
Thanks for the help, any need to wash off area with water after cleaning with the acetone, and before putting on the new #s ?

Not with acetone, it evaporates in seconds.
I use lacquer thinner dries fast, no residue and cheaper than acetone.
