    200 hp evirude vindicator 1998

before we start ,i have read the rules of posting, however due to circumstances beyond my control, i will post without having the model number. Was involved in motor vehicvle accident while working (delivering mail) last yearand have lost ability to walk unassisted(walker). Consquenly getting the model number of my engine would require me to go outside down a flight of stairs with a walker for support and hopefully be abe to find the model number on engine before I'm unable to stand any longer. This is not only time consuming but an exhausting task for me to negoiate ,in my condition.
Back to the question, i'm havng a repetitive problem with cold starting.but recently my son after removing the cover of the motor, adjusted the red knob to the upward postion(knob you place upward to fogg the engine for winterizing),Motor started in a couple turns of key. There was heavy smoking off oil and then engine died when placed in neutrall Low idle. Moved knob back into down position and engine started within a couple turns of key. ENGINE WOULD RUN PERFECT THE REST OF THE DAY, Starting ON FIRST TURN OF KEY.
What does this red knob do ? Give more gas or oil? and considering that whatever the knob does after moving up ,then returning back to down position the engine will start and run the rest of the day does anyone have a recommendation on the original problem. Would take it in for repairs but that will result in missing two to four weeks of fishing. And the season is short enough up north.
Its really embarrassing asking newly acquired fishing partners (advertisements placed)) to lean over motor to unsnap motor cover. No longer work ,but need partner to drive tow vehicle to lake and assist in getting into and out of boat.

Starting procedures for a carbed 90 degree motor:

Trim motor level or below level.
    Prime bulb until hard.
Turn key to on position, push in and hold key in.
Turn key to start while holding key in.
Once motor starts release key for 1/2 second then push key in for 1/2 second and release, do this three times total.

I don't know what to tell you about the red knob but someone here will help you out soon enough.

I had the same year Vindicator only a 225 and it was hard to start cold but would start on first click after.

If it is flipped to the 90 * positition it will disable the fuel enrichenment portion of the primer solenoid. The normal position is down. Flip it up to inject BRP tuner or BRP fogging oil. For the starting procedure follow Rusty's advise.

Thanks to everyone for your time and knowledge. i will folloow the starting procedures stipulated here, but Championman, a follow up question.if the red switch will disable the fuel enrichenment portion of the primer solenoid. The normal position is down. Why does the motor kick over when the switch is placed into the up postion before turning the key? After repetitive failed attempts to start in down position. Is the fuel enrichment portion in the primer solenoid to rich?
Please understand , I have limited knowledge of mechanics and haven't been able to have someone folllow your suggestions to determine the isolated cause.
Also, somehow Ilost the second portion of your answer, thye part of having someone remove the cover and listening for clicking to determine if celloid is bad. Sorry, but when I ooriginally hit the my email bbc notication link to the post, there was a small bluish screen with your recommendation. However i have somehow lost that ,and onl.y have the abrevated response that ends after recommending following Rustys advise. Not only Am I lost on the motor problem but also the how I lost part of your answer.

When you depress the key to activate the primer solenoid you will hear an audible click. When you hear that you know the primer is working. What you hear is the plunger retracting from the electrical current. How the primer works is simple, when the key is depressed and with the red lever facing down, fuel is shot into the intake manifold behind the carbs. There by enriching the fuel to the motor. It is just a small amount of fuel though. That is why you have to "bump" the choke (key) a few times when the engine is cold. With the lever up it negates the plungers ability to move.
