Wall fasteners to replace broken rivets for deck lid?

Have a riveted lid separated from the hinge - all rivets broken. Can't use bolts and nuts because the lid (Ranger) is solid - not hollow and attaches directly into the edge. Can I drill out the rivet, insert one of the plastic fasteners and then attach to the hinge with a SS screw? On this storage lid, there are 6-8 rivets that would be replaced. Thanks...

I just had to do this on the center deck lid on my Ranger 522.

I went to Home Depot and bought a package of Cobra Triple Grip anchors #171R that are for #8 screws....and I also bought a package of #8 x 1-1/4" Stainless Steel Pan Head Phillips screws to use not the ones that came with the Cobra anchors.

Unfortunately this didn't work on my Ranger 520. I drilled out the broken rivets; drilled the hole; inserted the plastic grip; and tried to screw in the fasteners. The plastic housing just spins. I suspect the reason is that the edge of the lid is not solid but an 1/8 to 1/4" thick and then fairly hollow.

    Going to try something else...

Did you use the same anchor as I used on mine?

What about wall anchors? You know the kind with foldable "wings" that open after insertion into a hole.

Drill it out to 3/16" and use that size rivets this time.
