Thru-Hull drain below water line

I was checking the drain/intake lines on my boat and i found a few of the hose clamps loose. After further inspection I noticed that one of the hose clamps was rusted so bad that the head of the screw was broken off and no way to remove. This was one of the flow lines for the live well. Since the hose was loose I tried to slide the hose off of the hull connector. In the process of doing that I broke the thru-hull connector. I looked at one local boat dealership for one but was unable to get the same size. I am looking again today for another.

My question is what would I use to seal the new one? 3m sealant, plumbers tape? Any suggestions.

Or 4200. If you ever have to replace it again you'll have a hard time removing it with the 5200 on it.

thanks for the info, I found the exact replacement thru hull fitting. I had some 3m 5200 at home so that is what I went with. It was hard to get the hose back on but it appears to be ok.

you can use a heat gun or blowdryer to heat up some hoses and helps to get on and off

The hose appears to be the original and it is very stiff but I believe it went on for enough, I hope

This is the second time I used the 3M 5200, I tried it on a small damaged area on the hull and it worked wonders.

Not all hose clamps are 100% stainless. The cheaper ones dont use stainless screws but they do use a stainless band. Thats why the screw rusted and broke. Make sure you use 100% stainless clamps.

Thanks for mentioning that, I did not use the first set of hose clamps that I purchased. I went to a local Boat Dealer and purchased the all stainless from them. I do not want to repeat the same problem that I have before. I have yet to try the boat in the water, I am having the seats recovered and I should have at least one of them back this week.

Re: (subfrontier)

Had a similar issue with my 89 Astro. Used brass thru hull replacement as it was below waterline (overflow drain).

My boat actually has 2 drains for the front livewell. One for overflow and one at the bottom of the livewell.

For the bottom drain I used a seacock and secured all hoses with two (recommended practice for below waterline thru hull fittings) all SS hose clamps. You attach the clamps so they go in opposit directions.

The livewell in my boat is in the rear deck and has two over flow hoses that drain below the water line. The livewell has two other line in/drain hoses one for each side. My drain valves on the lines no longer function and one of these days I will look into repairing that. I looked locally at some brass fittings but was unable to locate the proper size that was needed. What do you mean by "Seacock" is that a valve?
thanks

4200 is never to be used below the water line. Use 5200.

From 3M's website on the 4200: "One part general purpose polyurethane reacts chemically with moisture for flexible bonds to wood, fiberglass, gelcoat, plastic and metals. Forms a watertight seal on joints and boat hardware above and below the waterline. Formulated to allow for disassembly of parts."

Yep. I bought some from the auto shops. Said SS hose clamps on the packaging, but when you look at it, only the band is SS. The rest looks to be zinc plated.

Home Depot has SS clamps.

Re: (subfrontier)

Sorry, I misunderstood your application. My front livewell drains thru the bottom of the boat near the keel up front and thus the seacock (type of shut-off valve) which is not applicable in your case. My rear Astro live well has only one bottom in/out drain and one upper overflow drain which drains out the side above the waterline. The bottom in/out drain runs to a thru hull at the bottom of the transome. You can easily find brass thru-hull fittings on line made by Groco, Perco, Attwood, etc. if you ever have the need. On the bottom of the hull I felt the brass would offer better protection in case I ever go over rocks or something. I bedded my thru hull fittings with 3M 4200 and Sikaflex. Also, check out the website for Flo-Rite https://www.flow-rite.com/cata.../feed for your valves. They were the ones origionally used in my boat.

thanks, it seems to be ok now. I replaced two of the four and re-sealed all of them with 3M 5200. I filled the bilge area with water and I have no leaks
