    need to fix this area

I have this rear area that needs repair. I've posted on here before about it and now I'm ready to do it.
In the picture the hole is from where I chipped at the cracks to see what it looked like underneath.
What do you suggest I do? Can I chip away at all the cracks then disc the area down. But how much do I take off?
I don't care what the finished area looks like as long as I get the cracks out and make sure no water gets in......

I'm not sure but if the cracks are merely clear coat cracking...... Now that you have a hole in the rear your choices are to repair that area or alot of work and grind down into the fiberglass on the whole portion. What year is your Ranger? All Rangers prior to 87 model year had wood in the transom.

It's an 87 it has wood. I chipped off the area where it was cracked and it went to this red color area. I'm sure thats still gel coat right? So I can grind down to where the cracks are removed then what do I use on the repair? Marine tex?

I doubt the red you see is gelcoat. Gelcoat is only the top layer , 1/16 " to 1/8 " at most.
Might be the resin/mat layer backing the wood.

You can grind down the cracks, sand the area smooth and if you don't care about cosmetics You can use the white Marine - Tex and tint it close to your boat color using Evercoat tints.
Marine - Tex will be a permanent , waterproof fix.

If you can find the matching gelcoat color, you can Marine tex then apply a skin coat of gelcoat to match your boat.
