    Seacast for stringers

ON the seacast website they say that you can use it to replace rotten stringers. From what I understand you remove the cap, do all the stuff to get down to the stringers, basically cut off the top of the stringers to remove all the rotten wood, pour in the seacats and then top off the stringers with new fiberglass. anyone ever though of going this rout insted of cutting the stringers all the way out and replacing with plywood? I was just thinking that this might be easier and then you wind up with a hull that has no wood in it. Thoughts??

Yes I remember reading that on there web site when I researching for my rebuild. I remember them using it in large offshore racers. I am sure it would be fine to use as long as you use it correctly. Remember, its not the woods fault it got wet and the seacast will do the same thing. It needs to be cover completely.

Well I was thinking that the since the Seacast, or another pourable filler, is composite material and not wood that is would fill in any opening that there may be in the glass and also would never rot.

ALLof the seacast must be covered. There cannot be any holes in the glass. Water intrusion into this product is also not good. It may not rot like wood but it will go bad if it gets wet. I believe they mention in the web site about the need to be covered to keep water out.

Do not use sea cast for stringers....in fact, do not use it for the transom!

Use wood for the stringers. Make sure to encapsulate and cover the wood w/ epoxy resin. Also make sure that when your setting the new stringers to allow for the floor etc.. Most importantly make sure to lay approx 2/8"s mix of wood flour and epoxy mixed like peanut butter texture and place between the inside of hull and new wooden stringers. If not it can cause stress cracks on bottom hull.
    good luck!
