1992 Cajun Drivers & BOW Console & Motor Semi Restoration

Well on my 1992 Cajun's console the manufacturer had an extra hole blanked off in the instrument panel; in case anyone (like me) would ever want to add a gauge. However, behind that awesome pre drilled blanked off hole. There was fiberglass in the way.... imagine that. So one thing led to another and now my entire console/instrument panel/steering wheel, beauty rings around the gauges and the gauges have been repainted so everything matches and looks like new. :) However now now that I see the windshield wraps that are avail. I may have to add that to finish the whole thing off.

Thanks again .... now it's on to redo the front console. In fact I've posted some wiring issue questions in another place on here regarding the front console. Some of the guys have already offered some good info. Looking forward to knocking that out then it will on to redoing repainting the motor and replacing the Johnson decals..... Thanks again

    Wow... Amazing difference. Looks awesome!
I am in the same situation. Restoring the dash on a 93 Stratos 285PXL. I have the same style looking gauges going on mine. Can I ask what pre paint prep you did and what type(s) of paint and primer you used? My dash is also all black. Well it will be when I am done, kind of a faded gray now. I want to achieve the same finish look and contrast with the guages as you did. Thanks for any info & advise you can share. Also thanks for posting the before and after pics. Hope to share mine when I have this completed. Glad to see it can be done and done well.

Re: 1992 Cajun Drivers Console Semi Restoration (NewmDawg)

Well I wish I could say I had done it professionally but I'm not professional and I had very little money. I prepped the old console just by wiping the plastic with Acetone because that's all I had. Turns out it worked good. :) Then I used Rustoleum Black "Hammered Finish" for "plastic" spray paint out of a can. (Home Depot or Walmart)

The hammered finish works well because it blends well with the original texture of the plastic and also helps to hide fish eyes and small imperfections.

When you mask off the gauges windows I would use painters tape. I used the blue painters tape. That way u don't end up having the clean the tape glue off later. But I would peel it off as soon as the paint dries. I tried using a clear coat out of a spray can but I didn't like the result. So it looks good now. We'll see how long it lasts. When the funds are low you gotta use what you've got. But that Rustoleum for plastic is good stuff.

I still have to make a beauty ring for that one gauge on the left because those were produced by Cajun and not Johnson. Also I'll fabricate one for the Temp Gauge I'll Installing in the blank hole on the right. Then it will ultimately finally be finished.

Here's close to the same effort I just made on the Outboard.

Again, If you can afford to take your stuff to a body shop (or maybe the local High School or Community College Body shop) The students get Graded for extra credit and you get it done cheaper and especially better than I did it. They can use better materials that will last longer. Just a thought.....

Decals are on the way as soon as I find some ......

Let me know when you post your pics so I don't miss out. I'd like to see'm. Pretty sure the other guys will want to as well

Props on the work. Looks great. Thanks again for the info and posting some more pics. Painting the motor & cowling are my next project...someday. I think we have the same "to-do" list. Nice to know you were able to get those results w/ out spending a ton. I am looking to do this w/ out breaking the bank too. No use in fixing her up if I cant afford to get her on the water. Especially since I need to replace my dual steering cables, not cheap. Got the dash & gauges off tonight. Will be checking out paint & prep supplies this week. I would like to have this done in the next week or 2. Good tip on the High School/Community College shop class doing it as extra credit. Gonna have to check on that. Thanks again and I hope to have some pics up soon.
