    Re-spraying Clear gel-coat

How do I respray a new gel-coat finish on my Ranger that I am restoring? I have some areas that need the metalflake redone, and some areas that need the "white" repaired on the hull.
As well, if I take it down to the metalflake, and sray clear gelcoat on the boat will I get the desired result?

Have to have a gun set up to shoot gel(proper tip) and flake. And practice-practice-practice.....and then practice some more.

    Re: Re-spraying Clear gel-coat (Hometownhandyman)

I have a Ranger that is mostly Performance White gelcoat with the Ranger stripe on the side blue polyflake. I had a gouge repaired in the blue stripe approx 4 years ago and the repair shop sprayed a clear coat over the entire back half of the side of the boat where the repair was done, including over the plain white gelcoat section. Well, it's 4 years later and the clear coat has yellowed and where it covers the white gel, it looks like crap. I talked to Mike Crisenbery at Ranger about how this should be repaired and one of the things he told me is that the clear coat should never be sprayed over the plain gelcoat colors like the performance white. In other words, you might want to double-check with Ranger or other experts as to where you should spray the clear coat and where you should not. I learned the hard way.

Also, be careful if you sand to get down to the polyflake as you can damage it and turn it silver-looking.

If it is yellowed, it was mixed wrong...i.e. too much catalyst

Make sure you don't use automotive clear on a boat, because it will not last. You have to get clear that is made for boats. I reflaked the inside of a boat I had many years ago. You have to have alot of patients with the metal flake. Good luck.

Also, you never use clear gel over a pastel color gel(white-black,ect)////just with flakes and metallics....
