    Small Chips in Hull Repair

I have a couple of small minor nicks/chips on the bottom of the hull that I want to get covered up. Its a black hull, so I am going to pick up white marine-tex putty and a black coloring agent made by evercoat.

Question is if I mix per the directions for tinting the putty (no more then 5% total volume of coloring agent) will I actually make black putty, or will it be a dark grey?

True Black is almost impossible to get by coloring Marine Tex. You can get close, but might not be an exact match, all depends on how close you can live with it.

To get a near perfect color match you will need to either fix the chips with black gelcoat that matches your black. Or, use the marine tex and put a skin coat of black gel over to match.

If putting gel over the marine tex epoxy, make sure you remove the blush off the cured Marine tex epoxy before applying the gelcoat.

Amine blush is a waxy substance that migrates to the surface to help the tex cure.

Let the marine tex cure for 48 hours, then wash with warm soapy water, wet sand with 120 grit and rinse , wipe dry and see if there are any glossy areas left on the Marine Tex, if all the gloss is gone you are ready to put on the gel coat.

How to fix nicks/gouges with gelcoat.

Thanks for the quick reply, being that I am snowed in at the moment (bout 18" so far, hard to tell with the 25 mph wind gusts though) I am trying to tackle some of the boat maintenance items I have been putting off

The gouges are really not noticeable unless you are under the boat, I have two gouges (maybe 1/2" long on the ribs near the pad. They are down to the flake but not into the fibers of the glass. Should I just leave em alone, or is it better to get something on them?

Always better to get something on them. If that far under the boat, I would just color the Marine Tex and put that on it........

Any marine - tex or gel work needs to be done in a warm enviorment for it to cure right, around 68 - 70 degrees at least.

I hear ya on the friggin snow, I am about 40 minutes North of you, right over the state line.

Yeah I am just going to go the marine-tex route. Thanks for the help. I'm just going to order it for now and wait to do the repairs until a warm day or 2.
