    osmosis blisters on hull

Hi everyone, has anyone ever dealt with osmosis blisters on their hulls? If you have, what did you do about it? Is there any at home procedure you can do to fix this problem? Any information you can give me on this problem would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance, chris.

Re: osmosis blisters on hull (Rollo331)

Sorry, I don't have any pics my boat is away in storage. They are quite small and only on the keel just at the water line. The boat is almost 20 years old but this is the first year I have ever seen them on the hull. thanks chris.

I also have the same thing on my TR-186. I just noticed them and Triton told me that it is not covered under warranty. I am still trying to figure out what I am going to do. I have an estimate to get them fixed but there is no guarantee that they won't come back. It is frustrating that you spend all of this money and stuff like this happens.

like said in previous post the only way to fix them is grind them out and a little more around them...fill and re gel...no gurantees they will not pop up in other areas.......
example say we had them in a area that a 2x4 bunk set we would grind the entire area out . grind the gel out to about the size of a 2x6 fill it and re gel......

The quote was right around $1500 to sand osmotic blisters flat, apply two compounds, and sealer glaze.

Re: osmosis blisters on hull (TRCM)

My Ranger developed them within a year. I had it repaired at a shop that claimed to specialize in osmosis blister repair.
Ranger warranty covered the materials and they split the labor bill costing me a little over a thousand. That was in February 2009.
The repair center sold me on these Tie-Down bunk glides to alleviate further blistering. It took eight months for those things to destroy the bottom of my boat. Whether it was the glides, a bad repair or osmosis, I don't know. All I know is I have more blisters and the hull is gouged at the bunk contact areas. From what I have learned, osmosis in an incurable cancer.
I took the boat to Flippin in October. I'm awaiting their response and I don't expect to hear anything until after all this bankruptcy stuff is over. The whole ordeal has been a complete nightmare.

I don't know if this helps but I had them on my 1991 crownline because it set in the water all summer. I got some expensive quotes to repair but in the spring they were gone. I buffed the area and they never came back although the boat was on a lift most of the time after that. That was 6 years ago and I still have the boat with no blisters.

Re: osmosis blisters on hull (javelin90)

Every time, I have repaired blisters, there has always been problems with air trapped between the lay-ups in glass, resin, or gelcoat. It would appear that whether it was intruded by water or just trapped air. This area would expand different from surrounding areas creating blisters. The easiest way to find them, even if currently not visible, is to add heat to an area (heat gun and use of temp gun is recommended to keep temp reasonable, no more than 125 degrees). If there is a potential problem it will show up, eliminating the quess work of how large an area may be affected. The sanding and polishing of these areas will only minimize good working surfaces should you need repairs or wearability in future. Happy New Year !

Re: osmosis blisters on hull (AMS BOATS)

Thanks guys for all the help, my boat has been out of the water for a couple of months now and some of the blisters are gone. I am hoping by spring most of them will be gone. Thanks again, chris.
