I have a 2007 Mercury. The transom saver bounced out of the back of the boat and hit the lower unit (long story). It broke a small piece off and scratched it pretty bad. Can I get the scag welded and if so what would I need to do to repaint it?

I've also been considering getting the skeg welded and through my research it seems that it's not recommended. Apparently the aluminum can warp due to the heat and if it is done, do it with the components removed from the LU and then verify that it didn't warp. I'll be putting on a Skeggaurd or similar device instead.

I wish they made them in Mercury black it would it look a lot better.
if its a small ding it can be tig'd filled w/o much problem and without disassembly (gutting) of lower unit. drop lower from motor before tig'd.
to paint the lower to last. sand smooth. wipe with MEK SOLVENT (use gloves) paint with a SELF ETCH PRIMER, then paint with blk paint. you can clear coat after that if you want.
if the skeg is scratched and not broken, use one of the commerical body shop bondo mixes to smooth aand fill scratch. sand smooth and paint as written above and it should look good as new
Thanks. I got a man welding it today and have the paint on the way.
Thanks again.
