I have an 89 Javelin that I am going to have the clear gel on the top cap re-worked. It is a multicolored metal flake finish with clear gel over it. I wet-sanded successfully last year, but the oxidation has returned this year. I have used BTS religiously since then to keep it sealed, but it now feels rough like it did last spring. I noticed that I was getting through to the metal flake when I wet-sanded last year, so I think I need to re-fresh the clear gel coat.
I have secured a local fiberglass shop that has been in business for over 30 years. He recently reworked a jet ski I bought for my daughter. I was more than impressed with his work. He agreed to me bringing the boat to him, already prepared, and spraying the clear gel only. I would then finish the job from there. I realize that Gel is not self leveling like paint & I know I am in for some work. So, here are my questions.....
Other than removing all the hardware & rigging, what prep work should I be doing?
After he sprays the Gel, what are the proper finishing steps? (sanding & polishing)
Any insight, or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.
