battery cables drawing an arch...60* motor..

ok..here is the deal..175 intruder..on a 91 285 pro stratos..motor started running funny last year..hard to power load on the trailor without dying..the carbs were all kitted and cleaned..oms pump replaced..new cdi..optical eye..nothing fixed it..finially got so bad i couldnt get on plane..i got feed up and pulled off the 175 and put a yamaha 225 excel i had on it..i was sitting it down on a stand and had to adjust tilt and trim to lay on the stand..i noticed the cables drew a small arch(nothing but bat cables hooked up)..i went to unhooking everything one at a time and rechecking it..i found it..the charge wire(red) from the retifier to the solonoid was the problem..so the rectifier is bad(shorting to ground)..my question is..will that make it act like a fuel problem..i could get it up to 5000..but it took a lot of playing with it..acted like it was running out of gas..when it did get up it just wasnt right..but the volt meter was showing 14..the motor has 120 psi in all cyl..any ideas...thanks
