Need a little help, I am going to be replacing the carpet on my 1992 Ranger 482. I found a place on the net that will sell me all the pre-cut carpet pices (20oz carpet) for around $250.00. I have never attempded this kinda of work.
What do I need to do to remove old glue, do I need some kind of solvent??
Can I reuse the rubber carpet trim that runs around the top deck??
What other prep do I need to do besides removing the old carpet and glue??
It isnt hard. Just time consuming. I'd strip the boat, seats, lids etc. I kept all screws and hardware in labled zip lock bags. I found a citrus based stripper at lowes that worked well. Easier on the lungs than the voc based solvents.
Get everything as clean as you can. After all the glue was up I used acetone to wipe down and clean the lids and boat.
Have plenty of razor blades handy. Carpet will dull them quickly. Sharp blades are key to clean cuts.
I used contact cement on the lids, and glue everywhere else. Seemed to work well.
Keep the carpet grain going the same way. I messed up a section on mine. lol.
I used c clamps and wood furring strips when wraping the carpet around the lip on the lids.

Just finished installing new carpet in my boat. I took everything off and labeled it. For the deck/wood surfaces, I just scraped the excess carpet backing off and brushed off. For my aluminum hatch covers I used Goof Off spray which worked very well. Did this outside to reduce fumes. For the adhesive I went to a carpet installer/retail store and bought cans of stray adhesive. This also worked very good at it sprays in a webbing type formation and sticks very well and is fast drying.
Pre-cut pieces would be the way to go in my opinion as there would be no guess work, carpet waste and a lot of time savings. My .02

Fellas, one thing i didnt mention in my first post would be to try and keep the old carpet intact when you remove it. Comes in handy to use as a template for the new stuff. I also used the precut kit and it comes with over sized pieces, lots of trimming to size still has to be done.

I done my 481 back in the winter it's not that hard, it's just time consuming with the prep work. Like the moulding around the carpet has to be drilled at ever rivet, same with the lid rivets. I had problems with the trim on mine it was very brittle and I ended up breaking some of it ( yes it broke like glass). I ended up filling in a the holes for the trim and using a tuck trim with self adhesive.
I used outdoor adhesive on everything but the lid folds used contact cement on it. For me it worked great for I done all the lid tops at once then when it dried I went and done all the folds the next day. the only problem I had was the floor where the carpet comes up in the corners.
I really don't see the need to pay more for precut carpet, cutting the carpet was the easy part. I just drew arrows on the carpet with chalk to keep the same direction. If you have a flipping deck a 8 x 25 roll should do you. If you need any help I will IM you my phone number i'm no expert but I may can help.
