    Wet Sanding Champ 184

I started wet sanding my boat, just above the rub rail and I have a question. Notice the uneven color it's like the color under the clear gel coat is faded. Do I sand until this is the same color or just until it's smooth and don't worry about the color? Thanks for any help.

It's not below the clear, the discoloration is the clear (so far down). The color is still there just take enough clear off to get the discoloration off. DON'T go too far as you can get into the flake and then will need to re-clear.

How long should I have to sand one area to get it even. I don't want to go to far and this area was real rough when I started. I have a couple places that the gel coat is chipped between colors and stripes. Do I try to fill in these areas or just sand them somewhat smooth?

Also how hard is it to take the rub rail off in one peice so that it can be put back on?

Re: Wet Sanding Champ 184 (SwatDawg)

The area behind the seats seems to be a little grainy now. So I'm not real sure if I can go any further with out causing some more damage. I will try it before my next option, I'm considering buying some Camo body clad and covering everything above the rub rail and the inside. It would be cheaper than respraying, and if it needs respraying anyway it will still need respraying if/when I took it off. I think the boat was just negeleted to long. I appreciate the help.

Looks alot like the boat I just got...I got an 89 176 with 150 mariner. Those light spots look alot like the spots on my ranger...it was where the metal flake had been sanded to close and the flake laid down and made silvery spots...is that what those light spots are?? Or am I just seeing things?? Good work by the way. What year is she??

Re: Wet Sanding Champ 184 (Scrapper)

The silvery spots are accually dull spots, as I sand them they get shiney blue/silver. It is a '93 and this is the bad side the other side isn't as bad. Still may do a camo clad on the top rail or try to sand up to one of the pin strips and respray some gel coat and then clear the whole top rail.
