    Carpet Questions..

I have a Fisher Marsh Hawk Bass Boat , it is similar to a Tracker TX17.
I have been wanting to get the carpet redone for quite awhile now.
However I'am not gonna do it myself.

I'am just curious if any of you guys have ever gotten quotes from places on a full carpet job.I took my boat into a upholstery shop to get an estimate and they quoted me $2,000 + materials , he claimed his labor charge was $50 per hour
and it would take him at least 40 hours to unbolt everything and do a tear off and sand/scrape and install the new carpet and bolt every thing back on.

What are your thoughts on this?
    Is it a good deal?
Or is that price way to high?

one word....OUCH...... that seems a bit extreme. I have been doing this for awhile and it takes maybe one day to unbolt everything and strip the boat off of old glue. I have heard of people paying up to 1200 but 2000 is a bit much....is that the only shop around that will recarpet your boat? I would check around....

It would be interesting to see how much the price drops if you took the old carpet out yourself. See how much it would save on labor. If I get a chance I'll ask my uncle to see what he would charge a regular customer on doing a similar job as you explained. He did my carpet installation at his upholstry shop recently.

I did some calling around , before i took it to this shop, most local places i talked to did not want to deal with unbolting the poling platform, removing the trolling motor and remounting it & pulling the console which would require unwiring stuff and rewiring and all that good stuff. Most wanted it stripped first.

I really dont want to touch it myself, i know i would mess it up, wiring and and all that stuff.
Heck, it took me 2 days to remove the old trolling motor and wire up a new one and mount it (then it broke off -so i took it to a shop and had it monuted)isolator bolts about gave me a nervous break down...I'am just not good at anything like this..

This is what the boat looks like...
also looks like the the deck would have to be pulled , and there is a half inch lip that goes around the boat that would need to be carpeted also, i wana go with a darker color that doesnt get stained so easy.

That does look like it would be a pain. If it was me I would just give it a good cleaning and be done with it lol. I must say that if you plan on having them do it from scratch, then 50 per hour on the labor is really the going rate at least around where I live. Are they including the price of the carpet in this? If so I would price the carpet somewhere else and find the cheapest price in the style carpet you would like.

The materials are not included in the estimate i got.
On bassboatcarpets.com i found a carpet kit (25ft long by 6ft wide) for $145.00 plus i would need to get the glue which is like $27 a gallon i believe.

I would call around to some Boat Dealers and ask if they have any References of people who install Carpet. There are a lot of retired guys who would know how to do the Job. That is where I would Start.

I believe Bass Boat Carpets is from down in Florida and they do boat recarpet jobs. You might try giving them a call for a price!! I'm sure it's alot lower than 2 grand!!
Just can't leave well enough alone!!

    bigern,
i know where your coming from when you say that you dont want to tackle it and mess anything up. if you got the money, then ok thats a different story...pay for it. but i have never done any type of carpet work before, when i oneday recarpeted an old boat of mine. your carpet looks in pretty descent shape, in meaning..that i have seen a lot worse. you would save a lot of money if you did it yourself. the centimental (sp?) value after you have finished is priceless. its honestly not a very hard job. there are plenty of pics and advise from this forum. once you get it taken up, and get the old glue scrapped up. slowly start applying your carpet, keeping it tight...its not that tough, although it may seem like it. best of luck....

Ernie, I did a re-carpet on a Marsh Hawk 3v a couple years ago. I have since upgraded to a Ranger and have restored it also. It was not that difficult to do myself. I even strengthened the front deck in the process with another sheet of alluminum. All for less than $500. I bought the carpet, adhesive remover, and WATERPROOF adhesive at Lowes. Got the alluminum in Tampa on Nebraska Ave. If the carpet is already starting to peel off then you should not have problems removing it and the old adhesive. I brushed on the remover (follow instructions carefully) and within an hour or so I was removing the old with a putty knife. This could also be a good time to replace any new wires or add wires where you may want to add other accessories.

Did you do the console also?
    What i mean is...
Looks like to do this boat right... one would have to remove the entire console, steering and all that stuff which mean prolly buying tools.
Also what about the compartment lids ?
Did you have to drill the rivits ect?
See mine leak and i want them water tight from rain ect.. that is one of the reasons i want to redo the boat.
I have also thought about TUff Coating it which seems a bit simpler to me wrather then putting carpet back down.

Here is the console - you can sorta see what i mean around the sides of it ect..
Also all the wood to right would have to be pulled also carpet is tucked in there.
So really i would be gutting the entire boat ....it seems even where the fish finder is sitting.

The biggest issue is your dealing with an aluminum boat. Those are completely different creatures than an ordinary fiberglass boat that the lids simply screw into.

Can't say about his pricing since I have never seen a boat like yours. But, I've done several Lowes, and it isn't a simple matter of just putting the carpet down. All the openings to the lids have to come out, decks have to come up, lids have to be torn down. All those are on top of what is done in comparison to a fiberglass boat.

So sometimes it does take a lot more depending on the boat itself.

If the deck is wood you can take it off and do a piece at a time. I had every deck off my old tracker when I installing some electronics. I wouldn't think it would be that hard and it would save you $1500.
