The lower unit on my 1988 Johnson 150 GT needs to be repainted and the motor cover needs to be repainted as well. I'd like to tackle the job myself, at least the lower unit anyway. Local paint and boat stores haven't been much help. Can anyone tell me the type of paint & primer I need, where to get it and the steps I need to take to make this motor look like new again?

I believe you will need to use a zinc chromate primer on any of the bare lower unit spots, before topcoating.

Thanks Mike. Do you know of a source for that type of primer? The local guys only had it by the gallon at $100 per gallon.
I know the local Fleet Farm here carries in in normal spray cans. I think it is around $5.00 a spray can. I would try your local hardware store, Menards, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

Contact the Eastwood Corp and ask them if they can help. THey have some pretty good spray epoxy paints that last a long time.

Ibought some at West marine to repaint mine. I bought the ZC primer and some matching outboard motor paint I believe made by Tempo. I did it this early spring and it still looks great after a full summer of use. 2-3 light coats of primer and 2-3 light coats of paint
