I have a 1999 Johnson and it is faded and hardly has any paint on the foot of the motor. What kind of paint do I use and what process do I follow to paint an outboard motor. I paint baits not boat.

I have been looking into painting mine.
The lower needs to be well stripped and cleaned, painted with a etching primer.

My issue is the cover/cowel. I think it needs to be painted with an auto sprayer or similar pro equip. Otherwise it will look like it was painted with spray cans. I am told this stuff from Interlux has some "self leveling" flow to it, so it does not go on like rustoleum...but still do not think I would ever get a good enough finish on the cover with it.
The cover is my problem. I do not have either the skills or the equipment to paint it myself and the two places I talked to wanted $350 + to prep and spray it.
good luck...would love to see before and afters if you go ahead with it.
The BRP rattle cans will do you fine but if you feel that you need to shoot them with a gun you can get your paints from PPG. You will need to shoot the belly pans and cover with a clear after though. The decals may not be available any longer either.
I'm going to get Jason to make me some new ones I hope.
I would definitely recommend painting your cowlings with a good bc/cc like we use on automotive finishes. You will be much happier with the results. I am an auto body tech at a Ford dealer here in fort worth and we are a little slow so I am going to get my painter to paint my cowlings on my 93 225 evinrude , and I will just rattle can the rest probably, but if that looks bad I will get him to paint the whole assembly. Spray paint finishes on large peices suck in my opinion, you will see tiger stripes due to dry spray on the end of the fan pattern and if you try to load it up to cover it you will likely get runs
