1989 XP150 Trim Help!!!

I just bought a 1989 XP150 to replace the 1986 XP150 I had on my boat. The motor was ran on the lake in Virginia before I bought it, removed from the boat and placed in my truck and driven back to Michigan. Bolted on my boat, it runs fine but now the motor will not trim down. At first it was finicky, jerking on the way down when it would finally "catch". The trim motor is new, I replaced the relays, the fluid level is full. This motor has a trim switch. where my 86 did not. I was able to get it to trim down after repeated attempts with the switch on both the motor and the controls, now, nothing but up. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I worked with Mike on this over the weekend. It looked like the previous owner had issues as 2 of the check valves were installed incorrectly and the heads nearly stripped. We used his old motor as parts and put it back together with the same results. We then swapped the actual pump. It trims and tilts both directions now however it does drift down thru the tilt. Anyone have any idea which valve or whatever that might be causing this?

Best bet would be to buy a rebuild kit for it. It will be tedious and has to be done on a bench. Follow the instructions with the kit and in the manual.
