    I need an idea...

I have a huge deck extension in my front deck. What I want to do is turn the area that the deck extension covers into compartments. The problem that I'm having is that I want to make the compartments dry storage like the rest of my compartments. I've seen several pics where people built a compartments into their deck but never paid attention to see if they had the little lip around the mouth of the compartment to make them dry storage. Has anyone done this before? if you have then what did you do to make the little lip? and also if you all could show some pics it would be a great help. Here's a pic of the extension I'm talking about and with the extension out.

Thanks for help I can get on this project.

Fabricating dry storage could be a little complex, I've got a few ideas on how to do it but you would just abour end up completely building a new deck extension. I think you might be better off using components like these to end up where you want....

I've had some luck using aluminum angle to form a channel around the door opening. Just frame out the compartment and add the lip to the inside of the framing. I would channel the water to the main deck area. You just have to extend the channel to the very back of the deck, so it can run out of the channel. Unless you want to install a drain in the channel, along with a thru hull fitting (or tap into an existing fitting).

Ritchie I've looked at those and I'll go that way if I have to but I'd rather make something and save the money I just can't think of anyway to do it and it actually look half way decent. If you have idea's I would love to hear them, and I have no problem with building a new deck extension either.

Dave, this is how I would think to build the deck and lids...

Mike's idea for using the angle aluminum is good for this type of setup. I would mount it to a second layer rim of decking so that you would have some good support for the lid (shown in red) and so you could keep your lid height level with the deck. One edge of your lid will have to run all the way to the end of the deck just like the factory lids so the water can drain out or you will have to build drain tubes like Mike said.

Thank you Ritchie! I was having one hell of a time trying to figure it out and now your post just made me feel stupid for not thinking of that, thanks. I appreciate it Ritchie.
