    High Speed Buffing Question

This is probably a dumb question, but I am about to start my hull refinishing project. I have a question about the buffing process. I am going to to first sand by hand. When I get to the 3 M Buffing compound stage, I understand that you put the product on with the buffer. Do you then have to take it off with a clean pad or does the initial application actually remove the product? I am going to finish with Finesse It and then a hand coat of wax, but I'm a little confused with the buffing process.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: High Speed Buffing Question (Fat Basser)

Another quick question. If the boat is not ion terrible shape can you use an orbital polisher instead of a high speed buffer. Given that this is our first attempt, I have read that the polishers are a lot more forgiving.

    Thanks

If you wet-sand your boat you will not get the results you need with an orbital. You will have to use the rotary. Start at lower rpm and keep the pad moving. You'll get the hang of it very quickly. Buff out the compound until it begins to break down (you will see a definite change in color and texture) and then just remove the excess by hand with a dry cloth. If you continue to buff too long it will just turn to dust and be a mess to remove. The purists will tell you that if you work the compound until it dusts you will put micro-scratches and holograms in your finish. Have fun, and with a little time you'll be pleased with your results.
