    propeller running backwards

Hi everone like to interduce my self just joined the forum this AM.
My name is Emory and I live in South Georgia I am 67 years old and have been married to the same woman for 51 Year's, I enjoy life and nascar but my passion is Fishing.
My rig is a V-17 Bass Tracker. with a 50 HP Johnson.
I have a problem that I hope that someone can help me with. My lower unit on the Johnson develpoed a problem with the lower unit (Making weird Noise) so I bought this older Johnson that the lower unit was good in so I went and change the the lower unit.
The older unit that I want to use is Model number 50473M
and I want to change the lower unit to my Engine which is model number J50BELCDE.
Ok I put the older unit (50473M) onto My engine (J50BELCDE) everthing went togather just fine with a new water pump.(water pump was different) Linkage seem to be right. Got Netural it idles fine.
    Now the problem is.
When I shift into Forward Gear The propeller runs in Reverse, when I shift Into reverse the propeller runs forward. was wanting to know if someone could help me with this problem.
    Thank's

    Welcome to the BBC,
Emory, not sure on a correct answer to your question hopefully Gearcaseman or Seahorse will chime in. But just reviewing the parts breakdown for your 1974 gearcase and your 1986 motor I would have to say you have an issue in the control box. I can't remember when OMC made the change to the newer style shift controls but would have to say around 1981/82/83. The 1974 does have a lot of different components in it than today's newer LU's. But in short I would say it is an incompatibility between the control cables and the shift rod.

That would make sense to me, maybe we need to put a mercury box and a hot foot on it.

also on the same motor we put a new impellar in it (after two broken wp bolts) tube lined up, when we fired it up we had a good stream from the tell tale for a few minutes then it quit shut it down when head got to a two second touch it seems to be getting hot ,checked horn and didnt work

does the thermosttat control the tell tale or do we need to dig back into the w.p

    Re: propeller running backwards (ChampioNman)

I have done a lot of research since I posted the problem. Linkage is different
    Now for my next question.
I have the whole motor (50473m) Linkage intack, Changing the linkage over to the (J50BELCDE) is that something that a novice can do The nearest boat repair for me is 50 mile's away and it take's week's to get anything done. and Crappie season is here.
    Thank's

Emory, the older gearcase shifts just the opposite from what you had. That is, when pushing down on the shift rod, it engages forward instead of reverse.

    Re: propeller running backwards (overdrivecb)

    Good morning,
waz up this fine day, I went and looked at the shifter on the older engine and also looked at the shifter on the boat and I can see major difference. Might be simpler, Chris just to see if I can find a Lower unit for the Engine that is on the boat.
    What do you think???????
