Any Guesses? 2004 Evinrude DI, 115 hp, Model: E115FPLSRE

    2004 Evinrude DI, 115 hp, Model: E115FPLSRE

I dropped my boat off at the shop today to get checked out. I'd be interested what you think it might be.

The motor runs fine at the hole shot, mid-range and wide open throttle. The problem is starting and staying started. It generally takes 4 to 6 tries to get it started and even after it starts it stalls out when put in gear. You have to “goose it” to get it to stay running but it idles rough at lower RPMs for a while. It acts this way just about every time I start it, not just at the beginning of the day.

The plugs have not been changed and indexed since Spring, 2009.

I use both Marine Stabil and Evinrude 2+4 Fuel Conditioner.

    Any guesses?

Decarb, clean exhaust pressure sensor and then change and index the plugs.

Thanks guys. I'll call my mechanic tomorrow and make sure the exhaust pressure sensor is tended to. I already told them to change & index the plugs.

    Thanks,

Just a follow-up to let you guys know what the mechanic found. I asked him to change plugs and check/clean the exhaust pressure sensor as you recommended. When he went to change the plugs, he found one so loose he could remove it without a wrench! He theorizes that the last mechanic (not this shop) gave a priority to indexing over properly torquing. The loose plug was fouled and that cylinder was loosing uncombusted fuel.

He did not clean or inspect the exhaust pressure sensor. He said the computer read-out showed the exhaust pressure as being well within spec so he didn't think it justified the extra time/expense.

It now starts, idles and runs like a top. I thought I'd share what he found/said in case it helps anyone else. I would also be interested in your comments if this makes sense because my mechanic of over 20 years passed away last year and I've been looking around for a replacement ever since. This might be the guy.

Did he decarb? It is recommended that the exhaust pressure be cleaned every 100 hours. Glad to hear it wasn't anything searious.
