    ontario??

any of you guys hook into decent bass or target them in ontario??? caught a few in years past off the docks when we go for salmon/trout. nothing to write home about, but they weren't dinks either. capt earl had said a few times there are good bass (lg and sm mouth) in and out of mexico, but never really targeted them and often get overlooked. what do you guys think??

I dont know of too many folks that target LM in the lake proper, I think most of it is in the bays around the lake, like Sodus, Port or Irondequoit and some along the Eastern shore.

the lake's SM fishery used to be awesome. folks targeted the heck out of em just off shore here just E of Rochester and a few other spots, but the reports that I'm getting are that they just aren't there in the #s they used to be. My personal belief after some conversations on this subject in local Lake O forum is that 2 things are happening. 1) water clarity increasing (zebras), pushing'em into deeper water than folks have traditionally targeted; but folks just have not adjusted their strategy. 2) Gobies. 'nuff said, but I think that has thown off the lake's equilibrium of species in the past few years to an extent and we're just starting to see the SM # rebound.

anyone else have expereince with 'em on the big lake?

Lake still has a great smallmouth population... I'd say go deeper or shallower... I've hit them well both...
Any of the shallower bays will have largemouth...

Chamount Bay is an awesome place to target both LM and SM on Ontario. You can also run out to the main lake and fish around the islands in that area (outside Henderson Harbor), lots of big pike too.

I've heard of guys targeting smallies on the big lake outside of the bays (fair haven, sodus, port, etc.) in the fall. From what they told me it can be hit or miss, but when they are there it can be some good fishing. They were fishing out to 40'.

Nitro, I think you are right about the water clarity pushing them out deep. I've seen the same thing on the smaller lakes like Onondaga. In the summer there will be huge schools of bass chasing bait in open water, I would assume the same thing happens on Ontario.
