Re: Oneida Lake NY (Explorer)

Well, there is a lot to say about Oneida- probably too much to cover but I'll go over some general info in case you don't know the basics. When are you going?

Anyway, it can be an outstanding fishery and can also fish tough due to pressure. Both SM and LM in good numbers although there are more SM. First thing to be aware of is there are a lot of shoals in places you would not expect them and they eat a good many props each year. Get a GPS or in the least a map and drive SLOW if you've never been there before.

SM can be caught just about everywhere. The SM will be found around the shoals of course, but they also are commonly caught while flipping plastics in the weeds where you would expect LM. The LM get real shallow there but are at times tough to find/catch. Many tx bags are won with mixed bags (catch a limit of SM then look for a couple LM kickers).

For SM, poppers and sammys are good early near the major shoals. Then try your chase baits like spinnerbaits and jerk baits. Then consider going down after them with plastics such as tubes and drop shots. For LM, I like to flip heavy weeds with jigs and beaver type plastics.

    Hope this helps. Anyone else?

Make sure you keep an eye on the weather. That lake gets really rough with any winds over 10 mph. It runs east-west. I wanted to get up there the last 2 weekends, but with this wind I'd be battling 3-4 foot rollers.

For smallies, it seems like the better smallies for me were deeper this year. Try drop shotting, tubes in 12-15 feet depths. Lipless cranks can also be good if the fish are active. For largemouth, don't be afraid to go shallow. They'll be in as little as 1 foot of water in the weeds. Haven't been up there in a month, so I can't really tell you what the fish right now.

Thank you JFB and Bschwoep for those pointers. What is the general depth of the lake and is it CLEAR water or somewhat milky? I generally fish all Shallow water in my home lake in a "Somewhat Milky" water. Flouro-leader a must?

    Thanks again

well, that depends on the time of year... lake is generally real clear but parts get a bit of a bloom in the summer... also a good wind can stir things up... most guys catch tons of bass here... I myself have a real hard time...
lake averages 30+ but lots of shoals up to 3ft... If you see a bouy, slow down...

You can get a license at any sporting goods store, Dick's wal-mart, gander mountain, etc. There's a Gander Mountain right at the intersection of I-81 and Rt. 31 at the Cicero exit just south of Oneida Lake. You may also be able to get it through the mail, but I'm not sure. The cost will be a out of state license fee, which varies. I think a one day is $15, a 7 day like $25-30. Check out the NYS DEC website, they'll have the fees posted on there. When are you planning on going?

im pretty sure theres a dicks store at the mall in watertown which is right off 81. a there is a wall mart there to. so it will save you backtracking to cicero. just get off 81 at the mall (on your right-can't recall street name) and you're there.

and it helps if you SEE the bouy. found out the hard way. "oh sh*t a bouy!"...BAM

They are not big bouys...pay attention.

just enough damage to convince myself (well, my wife really) that I needed that new prop.

    Re: Oneida Lake NY (Explorer)

Floro is not necessarily a must. Most guys fishing LM in weeds or shallow get away with braid and I have luck doing that. Of course, floro won't your bites but you may land less.

As for the bouys, realize that if you see one pin bouy, it is likely outlining a BIG shoal. The problem is you only see one pin bouy and next thing you know you are driving right through the center of a shoal and you see the other bouys too late.

    When are you going?
