    200 hp venom not charging

i am hoping champion or one of the other specialist can help me avoid wasting money on the wrong parts, here goes,,, i have a 1994 200 zx skeeter ste1u184d494 on it is the problem a 94 johnson venom 200hp model j200stlerk / serial g 03587802 ,,, i have checked all wiring and its all good , battery is brand new, cables test good as far as voltage drop and such , now i may be wrong ( lol most likely wrong) but i believe my problem lies in either the stator OR regulator/rectifier both parts kinda pricey so i dont want to buy the wrong one,,, i have a crappy SELOC book that pretty much tells me nothing as far as testing either so i can really use some professional insight here and it would be greatly appreciated

i forgot to add that i was testing everything with a DVOM and that i disconnected the yellow, yellow trace plug that comes from the stator and it showed 0 ohms between the between the wires ,,, i also tested the yellow to ground and got open reading , same thing for the yellow trace wire but that was about as much as the useless seloc book said to check so again any assistance is welcome

Quick way to do it Joe is to take a voltage reading on the battery, then start the motor on the muffs if it shows an increase in voltage up to ~13.6 it is putting out. If it stays the same regulator especially if the tach is going bonkers. If you have wing nuts replace them. With SS hex nuts and lock washers. Make sure your water pressure is good too the VR is H20 cooled too.

Hook your meter up to the stator and fire it up on AC voltage, You get a reading Stator is good. Be careful messing with that area can kill you!!!

i am sorry i left a part out ( the memory isnt sharp as it used to be LOL ) i did put the muffs on it and "goosed" it up over 3000 rpm (for short time only) battery read 12.65 before running and it was 12.54 after start up BUT no increase beyond that when i goosed the throttle,,, so definitely no output (also no tach issues) ,,, when you say check ac voltage at stator plug with engine running do you mean the yellow - yellow trace wire plug??? also should that be unplugged from its mate (that goes to the reg/rectifier, i think) when i check this? or do i "probe" the wires while its connected male to female ? do i probe yellow to yellow trace or yellow to ground? or yellow trace to ground? i agree that sounds like a tricky test to do LOL i better count my finger before and after this test LOL ,,,,,,,,,thanks so much for this input championman,,,,,,,,,ohhhh p.s. i dont use wing nuts only ss hardware,,,see i told ya my memory isnt what it used to be LOL

At idle, the battery should show slowly moving up to 13+ v. Sounds like your rectafier has gone.

is there a way to test the rectifier or stator with a DVOM?

There are some test in the manual for static testing, but from your results it sure looks like a regulator/rectifier.

Re: 200 hp venom not charging (ChampioNman)

Hey guys, I have this same problem with my '94 200hp evinrude.... I replaced the rectifier/regulator and now my tach works and still no charging. I had some goooey black super smelly stuff on the top of my old R/R. I too have that lame seloc motor manual. I guess at this point I need to change my Stator? I tried to test the output of the stator by running the motor and connecting a volt meter to the yellow and yellow/gray wire leading from the stator, nothing. Should I have voltage here?

Yes AC voltage. Be careful when testing that area.
