Hey......I caught an Alabama Rig fish........

Paul and I got to go fishin' Friday at Shell Knob. What a beautiful January day. We found a few fish that would cooperate, but we really had to work at it. We found a big school of bait fish under some sea gulls. The bait fish were 35 to 50 feet deep over 87 feet of water. We saw a few good sized fish mixed in with them so we dropped our spoons down to them. Paul had loaded a bright yellow braid on his spoonin' rig and marked the line with a bright red magic marker at the 40' line. I was able to follow my spoon on the front graph good enough that I could keep it right on their noses. It was awesome to be able to see the fish on the screen intersecting the line on the RTS window of the sonar at the same time I felt the "thump" on my spoon. How fun is that.

After the lake being so high last year, "normal" looks way low. The lake is just 6" below power pool but from looking at it you'd think it was 4 or 5 feet low.

Paul drew first blood with this nice chunky Kentucky.

Then I answered with this one.

After the school kinda played out we decided to see if we could get a crank bait or a jerkbait bite going. No takers on either one. Then I decided to pull out all the stops and throw an Alabama Rig. I put three swim baits and a couple of willow leaf spinner bait blades on it and.........BAM........I couldn't believe it. I actually caught a fish on it. WOW. I can tell you, I can't wait to throw it some more...

One fish was all I caught, but I had a couple more "bump" it. I can't wait to try to learn how to fish it. Well.... we went a couple hours after that without catching a fish so we decided to look for another spoon bite. We found a few but it was pretty slow.
We still had a blast though. Can't wait to go again. Sure is nice to get to fish twice in January.

It sure is great to have such a mild January for a change. Hope you guys are getting to enjoy it too. Enjoy the pics. Come on down and help me catch some of these things.

Great Posts, Steve. We went out on Friday the 20th. The wind was up, it was overcast and misty and very cold. We got going before sunup and caught a few fish but could not stay out in the wind for long. Going to try again next Friday.

Side imaging would make pod chasing easier.

The side imaging is awesome to find pods of bait fish and schooling bass. After locating them though we switch over to the sonar only mode so we can pin point fish and watch the spoon falling to them. You can actually watch the strike on the graph. Its awesome.

The new electronics are unbelievable. Learning more each trip. I will try to post more about them in the near future. May try to do a video of what I'm seeing on the screen right before the fish takes the bait. Its pretty cool for sure.
